Left Over Work in Istanbul / Tarlabaşı − Beyoğlu

This video from the Left Over series by Artıkişler Kolektifi was created only with unused footage from the documentary Exiles of Metropol (Metropol Sürgünleri). As a method, and not as a solution, Artıkişler Kolektifi decided to work with found footage about the past of the Tarlabaşı district instead of producing new images. The filmmaker treats and edits the film the way the paper trash collector in the film finds and collects the waste.

Exiles of Metropol, which was shot by Erhan Arık in Tarlabaşı, İstanbul, in 2010, shows us the victims of the urban transformation. The paper trash collector in the film is Aslan. Presenting what he does as “self-employment,” Aslan is generally content with his “job” for he can put bread on the table.

Aslan says he has been living in Tarlabaşı since he moved to İstanbul 10 years ago and collects his paper trash near Taksim. He is worried about the urban transformation for no place will be as lucrative as Taksim, the busy district.

Many of the people seen in the video no longer live in Tarlabaşı; they were forced to leave their homes and move to other neighboorhoods. For the paper trash collectors, earning a livelihood has now become more difficult.

Tarlabaşı, even in its battered state, with lots of construction work underway, is still home to refugees and the homeless. But with the buildings being renovated, they will have to leave this home soon.

Artıkişler Kolektifi’nin Artıkişler serisinde yer alan video, Metropol Sürgünleri belgeselinin çekimi sırasında kaydedilen ve kullanılmayan görüntülerden oluşuyor. Artıkişler Kolektifi, yöntem olarak yeni görüntüler oluşturmak yerine Tarlabaşı’nın eski haliyle ilgili daha önce çekilen görüntüleri kullanmaya karar verdi. Filmin yapımcısı, tıpkı videodaki kağıt toplayıcının kağıtları bulup toplaması gibi, filmini bulup topladığı görüntülerden yapıyor.

Erkan Arık tarafından 2010’da Tarlabaşı’nda çekilen Metropol Sürgünleri, kentsel dönüşümün kurbanlarını gösteriyor. Filmdeki kağıt toplayıcı Aslan, sağlık güvencesi olmasa da çalıştığı “serbest işten” memnun olduğunu, çünkü eve ekmek götürebildiğini anlatıyor. 10 yıl önce İstanbul’a gelen ve Taksim çevresinden kağıt toplayan Aslan, kentsel dönüşüm yüzünden buradan ayrılmaktan endişeli. Çünkü hiçbir yerde, hareketli Taksim kadar iyi iş yapamayacağını düşünüyor.

Filmde görülen pek çok kişi artık Tarlabaşı’nda oturmuyor. Başka mahallelere taşınmak zorunda kaldılar. Kağıt toplayıcıları için yaşam şimdi daha zor.
